According to data sheet, Vin must be larger than Vbattery in order to charge the battery?

If I need to charge 3 cells lipo battery from 5V usb, how can I do that?

    Hi Wenjun,

    You are correct. The bq24618 is a "buck" or step down converter. To charge 3 lipo cells from 5V the easiest method is to create a "boost" or step up converter to something a couple volts higher than your max charging voltage (make sure it can regulate the charging current needed as well), and then use that as your "adapter" for the bq24618.

    If you are unfamiliar with DC-DC converters, the SimpleSwitcher family is a great place to start, or you could use WEBENCH, which is a tool TI offers that will do most of the heavy lifting for you.
