MC33063A (MC34063)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MC33063A, TPS40200, TL5001, TPS61170, TPS61175

Hi,

I am using MC33063A as buck boost converter.  I want controllable power supply, with low distortion. How can  Iachieve this ? In MC33063 or MC34063 datasheet,  I found ckts for either buck or boost but not both at same time..Can  I do this with MC33063 or CAN I GET any IC's to do this .. suggest me.

Battery Power supply  Vinmin = 11.7V and Vin max=13V.   Do I need to take care constant input voltage all the time ? or is it ok to run like this.

I want controllable output voltage Vout = 5V -15V.     I am using R1 to control voltage no, but at high output voltage , it limiting the currents I mean voltage is not regulated by IC. Even some times Cin, Ct exploding (I used 220uF cap 35V).

 Max load current = 500ma.

  • Assuming you do NOT really need isolation, you could use either a SEPIC or a ZETA power stage that can take wide input range and either buck or boost the input to an output voltage inbetween, above or below it.   Being a hysteretic converter/controller with a comparator and not a fixed frequency PWM converter with analog control loop, the MCC33063 is not ideal to drive a SEPIC or ZETA power stage but it may be possible to do so.  I am not aware of anyone trying it.  Below are links to some articles that might help:

http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/slyt372 -ZETA using TPS40200 - could also use the TL5001

http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slyt309/slyt309.pdf - SEPIC using the TPS61170 - you could not use this part but the app note explains how a SEPIC works

http://www.ti.com/litv/pdf/slva337 - SEPIC using the TPS61175 - you could use this for your application

http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/tps61175evm-588.html - EVM using the TPS61175 that you can order and configure to meet your needs.

If you do need isolation, then you could use a flyback topology with opto-isolation, similar to http://focus.ti.com/lit/an/slyt323/slyt323.pdf.  There are several other ICs that can do flybacks but the article gives the general idea.

  •  Hi Jeff,

Thankyou for info... I am not too good with power supplies, so  I don't know my application is isolated or not.  I am using lead acid battery 12V  power supply  as you know battery voltage max 13v to min 11.7v. So that's why  Imentioned.

Output voltage 5V to 15V with constant 12V input.

TPS61175 -, output voltage range Vmin(in my appplication  12V) to Vmax 24V. but  I want to adjust the output voltage min 5V to max15V.
