24V Lead-acid 12 cell battery with BQ34110 or BQ34Z100-G1

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650, BQ34110, BQ34Z100-G1, BQ34Z100EVM

Hi,

I am developing a control system with battery charging control from solar panel. It is a lead-acid 24V 12Ahr battery with 12 cells. My plan to use BQ24650 and BQ34110 combining together to control charging and measure coulomb counter, voltage and temperature.

From TI website and datasheet, I cannot find below questions' answer:

2. When will BQ34110 put on market? Does it support 12 Cells lead-acid battery?
3. Does BQ34Z100-G1 support 12 cells lead-acid battery? Does it have coulomb counter? Can it combine with BQ24650 for battery charging control?

Thanks,
Gansheng

  • Gansheng,
The bq34110 should be released before the end of November. Both device should be able to support you pack, but the bq34110 with the CEDV gauging option will be the better choice. PbA cells have a couple of characteristics that complicate IT gauging. One is that the cell voltages rest to much higher values after discharge and this can causes erroneous capacity estimates during rest periods or if the device is reset. This other is that some PbA cells have very non-linear series resistance values as the current changes. This complicates gauging, if the load current varies much.

Neither device support broadcast commands to control a smart charger. The host can read the ChargingCurrent and ChargingVoltage and may be able to control the charger.

  • Hi Tom,

Because my design timeline is tight. So right now I plan to use BQ34Z100-G1, and after several month it will change to BQ34110. In BQ34110 datasheet, I do not see it PIN OUT. Would you know their PIN OUT, and chip package are the same? Is it easy to switch between them?

I could not find one library for BQ34Z100-G1 for cadsoft Eagle schematic and PCB layout. Would you know where would provide one?

    Thanks,

    Gansheng

The two devices are the same package, but they have different pin outs. We have not published the bq34110 pin out as it has not been released. I do not have an Eagle database for the bq34z100EVM, but I can provide a PADS database for the schematic and layout
