MC33063A: Boost SMPS

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61170, MC33063A

Hi Support,

Input: 5V
Output: 15V
Want to use the circuit to generate 32V @ 100mA max.

Plan to change the R113 to 51K
Vout=1.25(1+R2/R1) = 33.1V

Will there be any issue?
Should I change the inductance value to 170uH?

Thanks.

  • Suggest you use TPS61170. This part support Vin=5V, Vo=15V or Vo=32V application. This part will have much higher efficiency than that of MC33063.

  • Hi Helen,

Customer is looking for a low cost solution.

They will consider TPS61170 if its cost is lower than MC33063A.

From TI website... MC33063A is USD0.20/pc and TPS61170 is USD1.00/pc.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

  • It is going to depend a lot on your actual output voltage. Do you need 15 V or 32 V output?
  • the operation frequency of MC33063 is  lower than 100k. You would have to use large inductor, at least 150uH-300uH, the size of the 1A inductor wouldbe very big, and the indcutor is expensive. At the same time, you would have to use more output filter ceramic capacitors because of the lower operation frequency.

While the opreation frequency of the TPS61170 is 1.2MHz, an 15uH inductor is enough for the operation. the total solution size is smaller than that of the MC33063. And the actual cost of the TPS61170 is only about 0.2$.

could you please share your application with us, like in what kind of equipment? Volume? My email address is helen-chen@ti.com

  • Hi John,

    32V output.

    Cheers.

  • LM2733X appears to be the lowest BOM cost solution.
