7-8A LED DRIVER7A-8A

 looking at a solution to drive a high power laser using an efficient constant current source which can be configured up to 7-8A.

The LED we use has an operating voltage of ~2.4V @ 6A and the input voltage is 5V.

We used TI’s solution for up to 2A as shown below. Can you help to suggest a part for this application as well?

 

  • To get 7-8A you will need a controller and not many that can do that level of current will run at 5V input. The TPS92640 and LM3409 would be able to do the current but you would need a higher input voltage. The TPS92691 could be configured as a buck regulator and will work at 5V input but it would need to be designed carefully to do that much current at only 5V since the VCC and gate drive voltage would be limited.
