bq78350 and bq76PL536A configuration

Hello,

We have a LiFePO4 pack with 30S1P configuration to get a higher voltage. Therefore, we use bq76PL536A for cell balancing connected to a TivaC MCU. In order to upgrade this design, we would like to employ bq78350 for gas gauging and charge control for such pack.

The bq78350 datasheet suggest other balancing circuit family, but we would like to know if we can use this device to control our pack and if is possible to communicate to our TivaC MCU via SMBus.

The bq78350-R1 does not balance cells or control the CHG and DSG FETs by itself. It is part of a chipset with one of the bq769xx devices. They are the AFE portion of the chipset and provide the balancing and protection features. The bq78350 will control the AFE and its balancing functions. It will also communicate with the host to provide status and gauging information.

Yes, sure, therefore we are using bq76PL536A for balancing. I just would like to know which is the most suitable device for gauging information, once our pack has a 30S1P configuration and therefore 96V. One possible alternative should be the bq34110. As per its description, the pack voltage should be up to 65V but I understood it could be scalable.

Is that right? is it possible to scale with a voltage translator?

The bq34110 should be a good fit to support the gauging and you should be able to support the higher voltage requirement with voltage scaling. There is an applications brief on the bq34z100-G1 website to covers this.

So, both devices bq34110 and bq34Z100-G1 are suitable for this application, right?

Yes, either one should work ok. THe bq34z100-G1 is an Impedance Track device and the bq34110 is a CEDV device.
