PMIC with Margining for 4+ rails...

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65086, TPS65400

Hello there,

I have searched through all of our Digital Power Sequencing as well as Digital Power Control and Supervisory portfolios and was unable to find something that could perform margining and monitoring on somewhere around five rails?

Do we have a solution that maybe employs PMBus and can not only do the conversions but also the monitoring and margining for 5+ rails. Digital Power sequencers are able to meet the requirements, they just have 10+ rails which is too many in this case.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

-Amanda

  • Hi Amanda,

What type of monitoring and margining do they need? A product like the TPS65086 family has 6 DC/DC regulators with programmable output voltages by I2C. It has step sizes of 10 mV and 25 mV (depending on the rail and the configuration) which can be used to vary the voltage up and down for testing purposes. It uses remote sensing to monitor the voltage output and will shutdown if any of the rails have a powerfault (under or over voltage). This is pretty typical of most of our PMICs.

Most of our PMICs don't support PMBus, but there are a couple like the TPS65400 that do.

If they need precise current monitoring, then that would most likely need to be done with an external chip as well as the PMICs don't typically have precise current monitoring, just overcurrent protection.

If you have more information on the input voltage range as well as the output voltage and current requirements we could potentially point you to a more applicable device.
