TPS65217D- USB input power issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65217, STRIKE

Hi,

We are developing AM335x based product and also using TPS65217 PMIC to power on the board.

The input power of the PMIC through USB or battery(VBAT). When we are using only USB, PMIC will provide the output.

But we have faced issue with some boards interms of output voltage(VSYS) is not coming when USB power is connected.

In this case, We removed the PMIC IC and mounted new one. It is working fine.

We just want to know, why this is happening and what is the issue behind this?

Is it component issue or any other issue?

Please provide your suggestions ASAP.

Thanks,

Bala

  • Hi Bala,

Based on your description, it sounds like a board assembly issue. Have you tried switching the PMICs between a working board and a non-working board on a few boards? Does the issue following the PMIC or does it appear "random" (suggesting soldering issues)?
  • Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your quick reply. This issue is coming for some boards randomly.

Even I am also thinking that it may be assembly issue. but how do i confirm that, its surely assembly issue or not?

But i replaced the PMIC to other board, still that board is not working,

Thatswhy we have a confusion on the component side.

    Please provide any suggestions.

    Thanks a lot once again.

    Thanks,

    Bala

  • Hi Bala,

Based on your comment, it sounds like the issue is following the PMIC.

Can you see if any of the input or output pins of the TPS65217 devices which have the issue have 0 ohm path to GND when installed on the PCB that you don't see on a working board? Perhaps parts are being damaged during assembly (ESD strike on VSYS for example) and creating a short to GND on VSYS or something powered from VSYS.
