UCC39002 & TPS2412 Current Sharing and Redundant Solution

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2412, UCC39002

I have a new request from key customer about load sharing (two power sources 12V/12A).

More precisely, customer would TI to confirm attached schematic is applicable.

Questions list:

  • Does the customer schematic valid ?
  • What are the requirements on power sources (slew rate,...) ?

Load sharing 12V.pdf

  • Hello Paul,

The TPS2412 is used in application where OR'ing of redundant power supplies is required. Its function is to emulate a diode without the forward voltage drop of a real diode. In the two power supply application you attached the power supply with the highest voltage would turn on and the other remain off. So you wont get load sharing. The TPS2412 is used in applications where a redundant type of power supply is required in case one power supply fails.

The UCC39002 senses the load current across a sense resistor and adjusts the output of each power supply to achieve a balanced current from the power supplies.

So if you replace the TPS2412 and external MOSFET with a resistor, the system can be designed to operate correctly with the UCC39002.
There is a calculator tool for the UCC39002 and this details the requirements for the power supply.

  • hello John,

Actually customer has designed his schematic using following application report www.ti.com/.../slua550.pdf

Please confirm ucc39002 combined with tps2412 has no sense because 2 power supplies (load sharing and OR'ing with two sources not possible).

Would it make sense if 3 sources at least are implemented ?

    thanks
