TPS61240 | Power Pad Connection?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61240

Team-

The data sheet for the TPS61240 doesn't explicitly call out how the power pad should be connected.

It's generally connected to ground, but I have to ask the question anyway.

Please clarify this and update the data sheet accordingly.  Thanks!

  • First, please note that the TPS61240 does not have a PowerPad.  The exposed copper under the IC is technically called an Exposed Thermal Pad.  The package appendix at the end of the datasheet governs the use of the Exposed Thermal Pad.  Per the appendix drawing, the Exposed Thermal Pad MUST be soldered to the PWB for mechanical reliability.  Although the Exposed Thermal Pad can be connected to a floating PWB trace, TI recommends that it be connected to the ground plane for better thermal relief becaue of the larger PWB copper area.

  • Michael-

Here's the section I think you're referring to:

This is a generic mechanical drawing referring to designer back to the "Electrical Schematic for the device" for details on connecting the thermal pad.  We don't see such a diagram in the data sheet, hence the confusion and the question.  Thanks for answering the question and hopefully the data sheet can be updated soon.

    Best regards, Steve
