Hello,

We are designing a power adapter board.

It has TIVA mcu, sensors and buck regulators. The input to this board is from a constant current source 52 to 100V range @ 1A max

The power to the board (mcu) is taken from the CC source. we used LM5161 in the design to convert the input 52v to 100V to 12V.

TPS54331 is used to convert 12V to 5V and 3.3V to power the onboard devices and mcu.

Kindly let me know whether LM5161 can be used with constant current input. if not could you kindly suggest a part for the same.

As long as the voltages are as described and no greater than 100V. Vin = 52V to 100V max. It should not be an issue.

Thanks for the inputs.

Hope you read it correct. The input to LM5161 buck regulator is from a constant current Ballast. The input can vary from 52V to 62V. and the maximum voltage measured with No Load is 69V. With input variying, will the output of LM5161 be constant. LM5161 is used as buck regulator to convert from 52v to 12V, futher it is convertered to 3.3V to power MCU and other sensor modules.

Kindly confirm whether we can use LM5161 with Constant current source as input.

Hello,

I confirm that if the voltage variation is 52V to 100V from the constant current source at the input, then the LM5161 and any other regulator will be fine as long as the abs max voltage ratings are not violated. See below an example application where a Buck convertor is used downstream of a current loop. The transmitter reg is placed in the path of the current loop. In this example the buck is the transmitter regulator. I hope we are talking about similar applications?

Hello David,
In the above application, the current is less. Whereas in our application the current is high 1Amps.

Hello,

Understood. What I posted was an example only. The LM5161 is rated to supply 1A, and will not have any bearing on operation, provided the Vin variation is within the operating range of the LM5161.
