BQ76930EVM+EV2300 No Communication

Hello E2E-Community members,

I am trying to set up a BQ76930EVM Evaluation Module together with the EV2300 Interface Board to later use as a Battery Management System.

I followed the Gauge Quick Start Guide and it worked fine at first. When i tried to connect the board to the pc a few weeks later, i got the 'No acknowledge from device'-error message. I also noticed that diode D4 on the Board looks like it is broken, but according to the manual this diode is not even used.

Then i tried setting it up on another pc (both win7) and cant even program the firmware, because bqstudio says 'Program Srec: Not able to find a free communications adapter'.


I followed all the steps in the manual, installed all shunts and provided a DC Source of 30V to the BATT Terminals.

Could you provide me with steps to test the board for functionality?

    sounds much more like you have broken bq device; Quick check (1) The part needs to get a boot/wake signal; until then the part is in SHIPMOde; The REGOUT TP will have no voltage. When the bq is booted, the REGOUT ~ 2.5V. if you have already done these steps, and no response, suggest changing out the device.....

    Before pressing boot the REGOUT to GROUND Voltage is 0 as expected. After pressing boot, i measure 2.5V for about 8-9 seconds, after which the voltage drops to zero again. Communication with the board via bqstudio is not possible, not even in the 8-9 seconds.

    Hi Oliver,

    (1) seems one of the cell in the upper cell groups supply voltage is below VSHUT ( 3.6V)

    (2) gauge is finding this reported fault and shut it down as its supposed.

    you can opt to raise all cell group supply voltages above Vporz ( 4v-5V) and clear the status bit.

    if this does not work,  reload the default sregister and readout the status register and condition of the DEVICE_XREADY for further investigation.

    I am not sure how to do all the things you described. I guess you need to explain where exactly i can do this, on the board or in which software etc.

    I did however notice, that the voltage between C1 and ground/C0 is only 2.7V, even though the board is set to simulate 10 cells and the voltage  for C10 is 30V.

    In the roughly 8-9 seconds the REGOUT voltage jumps to 2.5V after pressing BOOT, the Voltage at the TP27/ALERT pin is constantly moving up and down between 0 and 2.5V!

    I tried connecting the board via I2C to use the 'bq769X0 evaluation software', which resulted in the software giving the 'no free communication adapter' error message.

    Something I noticed, which might correlate to the broken diode D4 or maybe is nothing, is that the voltage from PACK- to ground is ~28V and shortly jumps to 0V after pressing boot and then goes back up again. PACK+ to ground is a constant 30V without dropping.

    I hope this helps someway and maybe you can give some more detailed explanation on what i should do next.

  • Sorry, this EVM is giving you much problem out of the box.  Its not intended to be this difficult for the end-user,

    Please try a new EVM or replace the bq device.
