Varying MPPSET on the BQ24650

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650

I would like to be able to vary MPPSET so that the bq24650 optimises the operation of the solar panel depending on irradiation and temperature rather than a fixed setpoint.

Is there any way to achieve this?

  • Hi Louis,

You can refer to this app note for optimizing MPPSET with temperature: www.ti.com/.../slua586a.pdf

If you look in the software folder of the bq24650, there is an Excel tool that will help you calculate the required resistor values to track MPPSET with temperature.

Unfortunately, we currently do not have any collateral on how to modfiy MPPSET with irradiance. This would most likely require a fairly complicated modification to the circuit to be accurate. However, if you have characterized (or the datasheet does) several MPP curves over irradiance we may be able to come up with a circuit that will track irradiance somewhat well.
  • Hi Louis,

A solar panel's MPP doesn't vary much with irradiance until very low light conditions. If you characterize the panel to determine its MPP (75-80% of VOC) over temp then you can set the MPP resistors for that percentage and use the appnote at the link above to adjust for temperature.
