BQ24160RGET- Battery Discharges after Charge Done, Thermal Fault, Configuration Losing

Hi,
We are using BQ24160RGET, We are configuring this charger for charging voltage : 4.18V with charging current of 775mA. When adapter is connected it starts charging as per configuration, After charge is completed, charger shows charge done status.
In this condtion, if the adapter is not removed, then after some time the battery starts discharging automatically to  3.7 or 3.8V. We have logged the configuration data from charger, and it apperas same as what we have configured.

Some of the configurations set are as follows,

VBAT Regulation Voltage: 4.18V
Termination Current: 150mA
Charging Current: 775mA
Supply Precedence: IN
CD Pin is Pulled low by hardware.

Need your help for below queries:
1. What are the scenarios where the battery starts discharging after charge done.
2. Is there any configurations to be set to avoid this issue?

Second observation: With respect to loosing configuration: When battery is diconnected then the charger IC resetting the battery reg voltage, charge current and termination current to its default value.
Is this expected behavior or are we missing any configuration settings.

Third observation:
We are using external thermistor, which is placed in battery pack. So when battery is removed, Charger immediately shows thermal fault. But it does not show battery removed status.
Here we tried one testing, retained the external thermistor connection and then removed only battery, charger IC showed battery not present status.

Which means, when the battery thermal fault flag is set, then the battery detection logic is not working. Is this expected behaviour? If then are there any means, by which we can detect the battery removal?

  • Hi Parthiban,

Regarding discharging after termination, as long as VBUS is connected, the IC should only discharge to VBATREG-VRCH where VRCH~=120mV and then recharge.  What is the voltage at the BAT pin when this happens?

Regarding register reset after battery disconnect, that is expected.

Regarding TS fault, the temp fault due to TS pin voltage takes priority over battery removal.  Can you monitor when the IC auto resets VBATREG, ICHRG and ITERM and reports TS fault in order to indicate battery removal?

Please let me know if you have further questions.

  • Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the Reply. The voltage on the BAT Pin is around 3.7 to 3.8V .
  • Can you send a scope shot of the SYS and BAT voltages when this happens?
