LM5118 datasheet text "hold-up times"

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5118

There is the following text below equation 31 on datasheet P.28.

"If hold-up times are a consideration, the values of input/output capacitors must be increased appropriately."

What does this "hold-up times" mean?

Best Regards,
Kohei Sasaki

  • HI Kohei,

The hold-up time is when only the output capacitor is supplying the power to the output. For example if there is a transient on the input voltage rail and an undervoltage event is triggered the LM5118 will stop switching. The output energy will need to be supplied by only the output capacitance until VIN is above the undervoltage lock-out. In some applications this is test condition to keep the output voltage within some range for a brown out type condition.

    Thanks,

    Garrett
