Hi WH,
The maximum wattage for the resistance is derived from the maximum voltage for the device (6V) and the QOD resistance (218Ω). When the switch is turned off under these conditions, 6V is put across the resistance and 27.5mA is discharged through the resistance. At this point, the total power dissipated across the QOD resistor is 147mW, and the resistor is rated to handle this power.
If the concern is the amount of time the resistor is dissipating power, then that is due to the capacitance on the output. However, this device is meant to handle capacitances even greater than 100uF with no issue.
