BQ27542-G1: What's the best suited Gauge - LiPol 4000mAh

Hi,

Right I've selected a charger: BQ24190

Battery type: Lithium-polymer 4000mAh - single cell (3,7V nominal) - we plan Max Charge current: 3A max from Usb/plug

The design is basically an embedded hmi with an lcd

- 1rts Question about the charger: is the BQ24190 a good choice? (I guess so...)

Now I'm looking for a gaz gauge, and I've selected 3 parts:

BQ27542-G1, BQ27426 and BQ27320

- Are they appropriate?

- If no can you suggest others gauges?

- if yes, what the difference between those three?

- as far as programming is concerned, do I need to use bqStudio?

  • The bq27542 and bq27426 adjust to changes in the battery (aging) over time by tracking impedances. This requires periodic charge/discharge cycles. Do you use the battery as a back-up or as a main power source? The bq27542 has flash memory which allows download of chemistry data for the battery (you need to characterize the battery and then download a ChemID (profile) that matches the battery). The bq27426 has built in chemistry data which may be a match for your battery. TI provides a tool to determine this (www.ti.com/.../gaugeparcal).

    The bq27320 is a CEDV gauge (it does not track impedances). It's less accurate but can be a better match for systems that don't periodically discharge the battery. It also requires configuration for a specific battery and uses the CEDV version of www.ti.com/.../gaugeparcal.

    bqStudio is used to program/configure all three gauges.
  • The battery is a main power source which will be charged and discharged on a day by day basis (portable handset), though it may stay unused for several days or more, but not necesseraly fully charged (industrial application, not consumer)
    bq27542 and bq27426 seem to be a good choice as far as battery aging is concerned. Am I right?
    What do you think about the bq27320 for our app?

  • All three gauges will work. The bq27542 is the gauge with the best performance and it supports a large number of chemistries. The bq27320 will also work but it won't be as accurate (esp. when the cell ages). It's a question of performance/price.

    I just checked the link - it works on my PC. If it doesn't work on yours, please try a search engine with GAUGEPARCAL.
