TLV702: How to select the output capacitor ESR because the ESR is related to the frequency

Part Number: TLV702

Hello ,

From the TLV702 datasheet, the output capacitor ESR should be less than 0.2 ohm to make sure the stability.

As the below picture from Muruta (MLCC ceramic capacitor) shows:

the MLCC capacitor ESR is changing with the frequency. The ESR maybe bigger at low frequency and very small at high frequency. I am confused because ESR  is changing with frequency and Muruta don't offer a  specified ESR, I don't know how to select the capacitor.

Or I just need to make sure the maximum ESR should be less 0.2 ohm at any frequency ?

Please help to check.

Thanks

  • Hi Kevin,

You will want to use the minimum point on this curve. This curve is generated by modeling a real capacitor with a capacitor, inductor, and a resistor. The resonant point (where the inductor and capacitor impedances reach a local minimum) is roughly equivalent to the resistor in the model. It is this resistance that should be less than 200mOhm.

    Very Respectfully,
    Ryan
