TPS62172: LDO replacement

Part Number: TPS62172
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63051

Hello,

i'm trying to find an step-down with the possibility to replace with an LDO. My caratteristich are:

  • Vin 3.3V to 4.2V
  • Vout 3.3V
  • Iout >0.3A
  • No bga but

I have find the TPS62172 but i don't find the ldo with the same package. Can you help me?

In the datasheet it say LDO Replacement.

Thanks

  • It's not clear to me: are you looking for a switching DC/DC, an LDO, or both?

I don't know of an LDO and DC/DC which are pin to pin compatible, where you would just install 1 or the other. The DC/DC will have an inductor, which is not needed by the LDO. If a design needs one or the other, they are generally both put on the same PCB in parallel and then 1 or the other circuit is installed.

For your specs, the TPS62237 is a better match since you don't need the 17V input of the TPS62172. However, if you are coming from a single cell battery and need 3.3Vout, many customers would use a TPS630xx buck boost device, such as TPS63051, in order to give a regulated 3.3Vout down to 3V or lower battery voltages.

LDO replacement generally means that the device is small, more efficient, but still has high PSRR and low noise to serve the same function as an LDO.
  • Hello,

thanks for the reply. Yes we will have a single cell lithium battery, a buck boost is not so necessary.
I'm searching a switching power supply to test it on my cricuit. If this will be too much noise i'm trying to find an LDO with the same footprint to replace, the inductor will be bypassed with an 0ohm.

    Thanks
  • I think this will be difficult to find. Best would be to add both circuits to the PCB (TPS62237 is very small) and/or to test an EVM with your load first to see if the noise is acceptable.
