UCC28950: UCC28950 reference design question

Part Number: UCC28950
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP6712

We Promote UCC28950 for CTMR Hi power DC/DC power stage, and offer PMP6712 reference design for study,

CTMR ask, primary MOSFET use 80V MOSFET and Page 15 waveform in primary MOSFET Vds have over 80V rating,

How to make sure use 80V MOSFET in safe ? Change 80V MOS to 100V MOS can solve over stress Issue ?

"" Brief spikes exceeding their 80V rating are not hazardous to the proper operation of the MOSFETs. The duration of 5 ns over the 80V rating showed no evidence of avalanche during the test.""

  • Hello James

The PMP6712 reference design is intended as a demonstrator to show the TI device in a typical application and to ASSIST a customer to develop their own design, this is made clear in the 'IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR TI DESIGN INFORMATION AND RESOURCES' which is available on the PMP6712 design page at http://www.ti.com/tool/PMP6712

TI reference designs are not intended as finished products. The comment about brief spikes exceeding the device rating is made in this context.

A finished, production ready design should never overstress its component parts. My advice would be to use suitably de-rated devices - 100V should be ok for an 80V stress but CTMR may have their own derating criteria.

Please let me know if you need any further clarification of this.

    Regards
    Colin
