BQ25895MEVM-664: What's funtion of D5 in the BQ25895MEVM-664 DEMO

Part Number: BQ25895MEVM-664

Hello TI,

Could you tell me what's function of D5 in the BQ25895MEVM-664, Though it is DNP part.

thanks

  • Hi Lina,

D5 is an external Schottky diode that is in parallel with the internal low side FET and its body diode.  In a synchronous buck converter, in order to prevent shoot through current with both FETs on at the same time, there is a brief period before the low side FET turns on/off during which time the FET is off and the output current flows only through the internal FET's body diode.  The body diode has a higher voltage drop than the FET or a Schottky diode.  With the external Schottky, the voltage drop is reduced and the overall efficiency improves by 0.5% or more.
