BQ51003: Calculation of resonant circuit parallel and serial capacitance (C1 and C2 Fig38 of the datasheet)

Part Number: BQ51003

Why are multiple caps used for the resonant circuit caps in the reference designs? is that to get the correct value? Or is it a power handling thing? What are the ramifications of not getting these capacitor values exactly correct? I'm planning on using a Wurth 10mm 760308101208 and have calculated C1 = 0.195uF and C2 = 2.13nF, I can get pretty close to these values with 1 or 2 caps, but of course want to make sure I'm covering all the requirements.

  • Why are multiple caps used for the resonant circuit caps in the reference designs?----For the bq510XX devices multiple caps are recommended for the Cs or series resonant capacitor to reduce the ESR and thermal rise.  We recommend X7R for accuracy and size, but ESR loss is higher and can be reduced with multiple parallel capacitors.  On bq51003 EVM this is C1, C2 and C3.

I'm planning on using a Wurth 10mm 760308101208 and have calculated C1 = 0.195uF and C2 = 2.13nF----Recommend splitting this into 2 or more capacitors of near equal value.  Thermal rise of the capacitors will be less of a problem at lower currents and two capacitors may be enough, 10mm coil is a low power coil.  Note the inductance value will change when mounted on the TX coil and in the product case, the above Wurth coil is 13uH in free space.

  • Thanks Bill, well articulated answer, much obliged.
