simple USB to 1 cell nicad charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25120, BQ25100

I need a simple charger, powered by USB, to charge a 1 cell nicad battery. This is for a wearable, so board space is at a premium, as is battery drain when not plugged into a USB port. I have looked at numerous different devices, but they all seem to complex and require too many discretes.

Can I get a suggestion as to something that might fill my requirements? The cheaper, the better, and the fewer discretes the better. Long battery life is, of course important.

  • Hello George,

The best type of solution that you could find would be a Linear charger that performs the negotiation on the USB for you.

If you have looked at the TI portfolio for Nicad chargers they are all older switch mode devices which if what you seem to be finding from other suppliers as well.

I am curious why you are not exploring Li-Ion pouch cells. These can be made very small with better energy density than nicad which would improve you project run time. The other benefit is that there are really great linear charging part such as the bq25100 or the bq25120 that would work really great and is targeted for wearables.

I am interested to hear your thoughts.
