BQ27530EVM: "Program Selected Chemistry" produces Error Code = 3

Part Number: BQ27530EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

I am running bqStudio v 1.3.59 ( I tried the older version in the download table), I go to program a new chemistry (Panasonic NCR18650B), select it in the list, hit program and I get the Error = 3 message.

I am communicating to the EVM, can read the registers, etc, just can't load the chemistry.

What is wrong?

  • Hi Jesse,

I saw there were two choices for this chemID in bqstudio, so you try both and they all gave this error message?
    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Sammi Shang
  • Hello Sammi,
    Thank your for your response!
Yes, both chemistry choices; 2012 and 2017, fail with the same error.
  • Hi Jesse,

You could first check your gauge is in unseal mode or seal mode; then you could search bqstudio in www.ti.com and download chemistry updater. Update your chemistry files and re-program again. Please try and see whether this could solve your problem.
    Thanks.

    Best regards,
    Sammi
  • It is unsealed. If I hit UNSEAL again, it comes back: USEAL, CMD: 36720414, Result: N/A, READ ADDR: N/A.
If I check CHEM_ID, it comes back: Result: 0x2012, Read Addr: 0x00.
But the Registers never change, Full Charge Capacity: 1480 mAhr, not correct.
    With everything hooked up as in SLUUA09B: 90mA load @ SYS, 5v, @ J1 with 78mA draw, D1 is OFF. TP-9 = 2.51v, TP20 = 3.62v and there is a 15uA draw on the Batt.
I have searched and updated the chemistry with ChemUpdate545.
  • I guess I was wrong, figured out that in Commands, in Security, I had to unseal and unseal full.
Now I can R/W to the device: Control Status comes back: 0x0294.
Now, when I go to Chemistry it says that I have programed a selected chemistry, if I go to CMDS, and hit: CHEM_ID, it comes back with the correct chemistry: 2012.
But, none of the Data Memory values change.
  • Hi Jesse,

Could you read/write to data memory? Please check if the chemID in data memory changed(data memory--OCV tables). Also see if you could modify like design capacity, taper current etc. in data memory. If you could not write to data memory, there might be a warning command shown in your left-side of bqstudio.

    Best regards,
    Sammi
  • Hi Sammi,
I can R/W to the data memory, I changed the Taper Current from 77 to 75, if I do a "Read All" the value is change but in the lower left corner, in red an error comes up that says: "A read of data written failed comparison: Ra Tables, Ra0 Table Ra Status", in the OCV Tables, in the OCV tables, the Chem ID will change and when I program a Selected Chemistry and it comes back with an "Error 3" it will change the Chen ID in the OCV table but nothing in the Configuration changes to reflect the 3400mAh battery I select and the charger never starts charging.
One interesting thing, in the DashBoard, the bq27530G1 icon goes in and out of sleep (ZZzzz). If I knew what to put in the Config table I suppose I could get the charger to work but I don't know how to cross the data in the chemdat.txt to the Config data.

    Thanks for the help!
