BQ76930: General configuration question

Part Number: BQ76930
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76920, BQ78350

Can the BQ76930 be used to monitor two strings of 5 cells in parallel, rather than one string of 10?

I note that there is a "VC5B" pin where the two functional blocks of 5 cells are joined, but it's not explicitly stated anywhere that you can use the two blocks in a parallel configuration.

Thanks!

  • Hi Mike,

The 10 cells must be in series.

In the electrical specification tables the VBAT Supply voltage for the part, both (BAT–VC5x) and (VC5x–VSS) must be positive in the ranges shown, and the VI input voltage VC5b - VC5x must be in the -0.3 to 3.6 V range.

Two bq76920 devices could be used to monitor 2 parallel 5 cell stacks, the companion bq78350 could not talk to both.  Your MCU could talk to both devices, it could  address the 2 bq76920s separately with different busses, a bus switch, or using devices with different addresses such as bq7692003 and bq7692006 for example.

  • OK, thank you for your clear answer.
