BQ40Z50-R1: Gas Gauge repeatedly entering ROM mode without a command

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

We have a battery design using the bq40z50R1. Our factory recently produced a batch of 24 batteries. They were programmed from a .srec file using bqStudio, with the "Execute after programming" box checked. They were intentionally left in Full Access mode since they were for engineering purposes.

The batteries were set aside for about 3 weeks before they were looked at again. At this time, all of them had voltage present at the output, but approx. 16 of them would not communicate with bqStudio. It was determined these batteries were in ROM Mode. We issued the 0x08 command to each of the packs that was in ROM mode. All of them started operating normally, but several of them were in ROM mode again when checked the next day.

We have tried several things, including reloading the .srec file, but 6 of the packs still return to ROM mode while sitting on the bench with no communication for a day or two. The packs have never been sealed.

Why are these batteries reverting to ROM mode from normal mode when they are just sitting unused? What can you recommend to stop this from happening?
