TPS2420: Current Limits

Part Number: TPS2420
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS24750, TPS25910,

Hi all,

My customer would like to know what drives the 5A current limit. Could he possibly just use a Rimax less than 40.2mohms to get a higher Iimax than 5A (from the example in Table 2 of the datasheet)?

  • Hi Jaime,

Welcome to e2e! I'm going to move this thread to the appropriate forum, so that one of our engineers can answer your question as quickly as possible :-)

  • Hi Jaime,

    Welcome to e2e!.

The resistor Rimax sets the maximum current limit Iimax.  It is not recommended to lower Rimax to push higher Iimax because due to current limit tolerances some devices may operate beyond the device ratings.

Can you please share your application requirements, operating load current, maximum current and duration

    Thanks and Regards,

    Rakesh

  • Hello Jaime,

In my opinion, if you try to operate the device apart from recommended test conditions the
device may get damaged because of excessive power dissipation.

To provide reliable protection method, we are using IFAULT(A) which is less than IIMAX(A).

  • Hi Jaime,

Are you able to get information from the customer? What is the maximum load current requirement?
Please look at TPS25910 and TPs24750/1 devices and let me know your feedback.

    Regards,
    Rakesh
  • His max is 5A, I think which is why he is concerned about the current limits. He's looked into the TPS25910 and noted the Icc is too high for his applications and the TPS24750's Vin is too low. He's thinking about 19-21V for input.

Would the TPS2421 give him the extra room he needs for the 5A max?

    Thanks,

    Jaime

  • Hi Jaime,

Given your input voltage range and Icc constraints, TPS2420 is more close to your requirement.
To check how we can support this. Can you provide the following
    1. what is steady state operating current?
    2. what fault current threshold you want to set?
    3. what is maximum current. Is it 5A what you mentioned?
    4. what type of load TPS2420 is going to protect?

    Thanks
    Rakesh
