TPS5420: freewheel diode necessary with Synchronous buck?

Part Number: TPS5420

I am having a conversation with co-worker.  He told me that diode is unnecessary because lower sync fet will catch current.  I say that it is easier to commutate a schottky diode than the intrinsic diode in the sync fet.  I would imagine commutation the sync fet intrinsic diode would be noiser and lossier in both lower device and upper fet too?

  • TPS5420 is a non-synchronous converter. There is no low side FET in the package. You will need to use an external catch diode. Of course if the device were a synchronous converter with a low side FET, a catch diode would not be required. There is some conduction thru the low side body diode during the dead time.
