Webench/TPS63050: Current Instability

Part Number: TPS63050

Tool/software: Webench

Hi!

I have a project that includes Buck-Boost converter TPS63050.

Components:

10uF Capacitor - GRM219R61E106KA12D

1.5uH Inductor - SDE0604A-1R5M

Problem:

-Ripple is too high

-Firt time power up after soldering (PCB was still hot) everthing worked correcty with good ripple, voltage and current. (with load 50ohm and no load)

After trying some diffrent test I notice increase in current (400mA but still 3.3V-3.5V) and at that point TPS acted weird. For me it is strange because I checked inductor, capacitor and layout five times. I even try to replace TPS and result was same. Strange thing is TPS works correctly only when board is warm (hot).

Please tell me what could be the problem. (Was soldering with hot air, maybe i destroyed both chips?)

  • Hi Ales,

The design of the components in WEBENCH follows the datasheet guidelines so I am referring this to the applications engineer from our product group to see if they can find possible issues here. Either of us will reply here for more information or answers.

  • The layout does not follow the datasheet guidelines. It is critical to have a good layout for a reliable design. Especially for a switching regulator the input and output capacitor should be placed as close as possible to the device.

Which input voltage range do you apply for testing?
    What is your load?

    Do you have a TPS63050EVM?
  • Hi Sabrina!

Sorry for late reply. It seems like bad layout. Because layout was fixed, I solved the problem by adding extra 10uF capacitor.

But why current instability? Voltage was ok all the time. Where did that extra energy go?

    Input voltage 4V, load 50ohms.
