BQ40Z60: About learning cycle

Part Number: BQ40Z60

I would like to know what exactly is meant by learning cycle. I tried going through a few threads in the forum, but could not gather much.

1. What is a learning cycle and why should I go through this step ?

2. My application requires only charge/discharge management and protections. I am not concerned about exactly what is the SoC/SoH at any point of operation. Should I still go through the learning cycle ?

3. What is the GAUGE_EN command, and when must it be enabled ?

  • Hi,
    1. The Learning cycle is a procedure needed to improve the accuracy of a gas gauge that uses (IT) impedance track gauging algorithm like the bq40Z60. During the learning cycle the gauge will update the maximum chemical capacity (Qmax) and the battery internal impedance (Ra) table so as to achieve the targeted gauging accuracy.
    2. Performing a learning cycle is recommended after battery parameter and battery ChemID have been programmed to the gas gauge.
    3. It is a command to enable gauging function of gas gauge and you can refer to bq40Z60 technical reference manual for further details on such command, please see link below.
