BQ40Z50-R1: Why pre-charge function is needed?

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1

Hi,

I'm using bq40z50-r1.

I wonder why pre-charge function is needed?

Is there any guide or theory about pre-charge on LiPo battery?

I wannt to determine pre-charge current and voltage in our application.

Thanks.

  • Pre-charging mode is needed when a battery is discharged below a certain threshold voltage typically 3V for Li-Ion batteries. A charger applies pre-charging current, relatively low current, for a certain period of time till the battery reaches a safe voltage level, 3.2V, then a fast charging, high charging, current can be applied. Pre-charging is also needed to test for a battery internal short before applying a fast charging current, high current, to avoid over heating issues.
