BQ40Z50-R1: High Level Questions

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24630, BQPRODUCTION, BQSTUDIO

Hi Team,

Can you please comment on the following questions regarding the BQ40z50-R1?

  • Please explain the FC, FD, TC, TD functions.  They aren’t explained in the TRM and not even mentioned in the datasheet.  Is there other documentation that I’ve missed?
  • How are the Calibration section parameters set?  Or are these set during use, so they don’t need to be programmed on a new pack?  In other words, are these parameters part of our factory-installed pack parameter file?
  • In the Enabled Protection registers, it would be very useful if for every bit the parameters that will be used if enabled were referenced.  I know what I want enabled and disabled, but don’t always know which parameters need to be set correctly when a particular protection is enabled.  Most can be found by searching the bit name though, which is helpful.
  • If one has a “dumb” charger like the BQ24630, should all charging-relative protections be disabled?  For example, bit 7 (CHGC) of Enabled Protections C register and another are bits 0 and 1 of Enabled Protections D register.
  • What does “Rec” mean?  It pops up a lot, such as “Rec Temp” and other places.  Recommended?

Thanks,

Nabeel

These are flags that can be set and cleared by voltage and SOC values configured by the users. The TRM gives info on each parameter and it's default. See section 4.6 and 4.7 starting on page 33 of the TRM.
    • How are the Calibration section parameters set?  Or are these set during use, so they don’t need to be programmed on a new pack?  In other words, are these parameters part of our factory-installed pack parameter file? The calibration parameters are set by running calibration by applying known current, voltage and temperature then correcting for errors in the gauge reporting. bqStudio and bqProduction tools from TI helps with this. In production would the calibration be done with TI tools or custom tools? Refer to bq40zxx Manufacture, Production, and Calibration

Plus your charger has pre-charge capability of 125mA.
    • What does “Rec” mean?  It pops up a lot, such as “Rec Temp” and other places.  Recommended? Yes recommended based JEITA/BAJ charging guidelines
