BQ4050: BQ4050 over discharge current limit

Part Number: BQ4050
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO,

Hello gents and ladies.

Im considering to design a battery charger as a university project and came across BQ4050. On the datasheet it is stated that 6A discharge is the default setting for the over discharge protection to kick in. Im required to use bqstudio to change that setting. My design requires 10A continious discharge and 4A charge. I downloaded the bqstudio and it did not run on my PC. Now the question is what are the max limits for over discharge and over charge current parameters? Can i set those settings to be equal and  higher than my requirements?

Thank you very much in advance.

Have a great day.

Mr. Orkhan Aliyev.

  • The gauge has two types of over current protection features. One is firmware based and you can adjust the thresholds up to 32A or even disable the protection feature. The other one is hardware based and it cannot be disabled. This one monitors that voltage across the sense resistor and triggers based on the voltage with the setting limit tables shown in Appendix A of the device TRM. The maximum current will depend on the value of the sense resistor that you have selected. The maximum setting will allow 100A with the default 1 mohm sense resistor. You have to reset the device after changing the hardware based protection limits to allow them to take effect.

  • Hi Thomas. The information ypu provided is much appreciated !

Have a good day you kind ser.
