LM5170-Q1: LM5170-Q1 parallel operation

Part Number: LM5170-Q1

We are using the LM5170-Q1 for parallel operation.

If 4 modules are operating in parallel, how this IC handle the load balancing on each module?

Is there any application note or details on this?

  • Hi David,

Since the LM5170-Q1 is an average current mode controller the current will be shared evenly between each phase. For example if the the total load current is 100A each of the 4 phases will conduct about 25A of current. When comparing average current mode control (ACMC) vs peak current mode control (PCMC), ACMC shares the current more evenly as it has more noise immunity than PCMC.

Figure 9 of the EVM user guide shows how the current is shared evenly between each channel.

    Thanks,

    Garrett Roecker

  • Hi
Figure 9 is shows the current balance within the same chip.
It looks no current signal connect (e.g. like Ishare bus) between chips.
What is the mechanism that the current can share equally between chips?
    Thanks!
  • Leung,

In the LM5170-Q1 the ISETA is tied between ICs if multiple ICs are used. The ISETA pin is the pin that sets the average inductor current in each phase. Since all of the ISETA pins are tied together and the GISETA spec available this allows for the current to shared accurately between each phase.

    Thanks,

    Garrett
