TPS65950: VIO1.8V Current Limit

Hi team

I am supporting Japanese customer as FAE, please give me some advice.

TPS65950 VIO1.8V is used in customer's application, but during start-up, due to rush current, this current hits current limit twice. (they said at first, hit at 1A and then 1.4A.) is this correnct behavior?

Is there any concern if the start-up with hitting the current limit? Please let me know the current limit type such as latch, hiccup or if others.

Best Regards,

Naoki Yada

  • Naoki,
Please check the VIO output capacitor value. The value should be about 10uF.

Are there any other capacitors on this rail?

I will check on the current limit protection method.
  • Naoki,
The current mode control is cycle by cycle current limiting. There is a startup mode that limits the duty cycle to limit the current as the capacitor voltage starts at zero and rises to the operating voltage. If the output capacitor value is higher than the specified value, then the duty cycle will got to normal control before the capacitor is fully charged and you will see a current jump as the voltage continue to rise.
This is normal for the startup, especially if the output capacitance has been increased above the specified limit.
  • Hi Varney-san,

Thank you very much, this helps us!
