Battery management system with power path

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24610, BQ24617, BQ24616, BQ24618, BQ24600

Hi!

I need to develop battery management system with power path. When the main power supply exists, system powered from main power supply and battery is charging. When main power supply is turned off, system will be powered from battery. The max current of system is 4.5A, average current is 2.5A.

The battery: Li ion 3.7V 10000-8000 mAh, standard charging 0.5 C, quick charge 0.5 C.

Could you please suggest charger chip (it's desirable standalone, without control interface), and also power path for this system.

Thank you for any information!

  • Thank you for posting in the TI Forum.

There are several chargers that can work for your application.

I will show you how to use TI.COM to narrow the selection.

Go to the Battery Charger IC section on our website.

TI Home > Power Management > Battery Management Products > Battery Charger IC

    http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/power-management/battery-charger-ic-products.page

Under Special Features select Power Path.

    10,000mAhr at 0.5C = 5Amp charge rate.

This must be done with a switching charger, a linear will produce too much heat.

So under Charge Current enter 5 in the >= box.

    Then View 19 parts.

Several options appear, the first few are SMBus control.

The first Stand Alone charger is the BQ24610.

There are several members of the BQ2461x charger that can work.

These all are synchronous buck chargers, power path, 5-24Vin or 5-28Vin.

There is an Evaluation Module, EVM, for these.

Does this help your device selection?

  • I would like to add, you can select STAND ALONE with the AND qualifier and see only the stand alone chargers that do not need communication.
