BMS reference design for MCU backup battery

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25892, BQ24192

Hello,
my customer is searching for a solution for single cell battery backup solution for his microcontroller board. Normaly the board is supplied by a power supply. In case of a power down the battery should switch over and power the system. The system is running on 5V/1.5A. The battery is allowed to charge slowly. Unfortunately I do not have more information and we are the beginning of the discussion.

  • Hello Holger,

From the details provided, it seems the battery and adapter power should be mutually exclusive in this application, is this correct?

A power-path device, like the bq24192 or bq25892, may help them achieve what they need. This family of switching chargers include an integrated FET between the output of a switching converter (that can provide the power to the power stage of the MCU board) and the battery. If the input adapter is connected, the converter will provide the system power and charge the battery if needed. If the input power is removed, the battery will automatically start discharging and providing power to the system.

Do you have details regarding the battery capacity and their target charge current? Any additional requirements for the battery charging portion can help narrow down solutions.

    Hope this helps.
  • Fernando,

I have more requirements now. Customer has to fed a 5V processor module. He needs the battery pack to buffer this module for 2hr. He wants to use 2-cell = 7.2V with 2.9Ah. Vin can be 24V or 5V. Quick charging is not needed. What is your suggestion?
