Problem with the LM5161PWPBKEVM evaluation board. Startup with 30VDC input voltage works fine, but at instant 60VDC input voltage the device goes immediately defect at no load and in DCM mode? Do you have an explanation and suggestion how to solve this startup problem? Best Regards.

  • hi Mathe,

unfortunately I can't understand what issue are you facing...
the EVM is tested up to 80V input... do you have waveforms to share w/ us?

  • Hi Vincenzo,

    Thanks for your reply.

The problem is that the evaluation board failed (gets defect) by instant connecting a high input voltage (0 to 60VDC). I solved this by adding an NTC and an input capacitor (470uF). But I actually find it onaceptabel that a evalautiebord with specs up to 80V not prepared is for this, and that there is no information/solutions mentioned in the datasheets. Unfortunately this has cost us a lot of extra time!

    Best Regards,

    Mathe

  • While I do not support LM5161 directly, I have a comment.  Hot plugging an input voltage instantaneously to a circuit can cause transient voltages up to 2 times the input voltage.  So by directly connecting 60 V, you may actually over stress the device by a large margin.  Generally this is considered common knowledge.
