BQ34110EVM-796: BQ34110EVM-796 load current capability

Part Number: BQ34110EVM-796
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ34110

Hi,

I am working on the bq34110 learning by discharging a load through it .I am connecting the load between the BAT+ and PACK- terminals of the connector of the EVM  .What is the maximum load current the EVM can handle.

Jagbir

  • Hi Jagbir, according to the EVM's User Guide (which can be found here www.ti.com/.../sluubi1.pdf) the maximum charging/discharging current is 7A. This is taking into account the power handling capability of the 0.01 ohms sense resistor which is 1W.
  • The 7A rating would be a pulsed current. The EVM can support a 2A continuous current.
  • Thanks Tom/Nabil,

The device datasheet says that device can handle 30A. My maximum discharge current will be around 15 A.I am using a 48V PBA pack with a load of 800W.
Will changing R18 to a higher wattage will suffice to support a 15 A current .What are the recommendations for other parts on the EVM to support this power scaling.

The sense resistor, PCB and terminal block will be the only components on the EVM that will limit the current. You can remove the sense resistor and use one external to the EVM. You can use a twisted pair wire to run the kelvin contact sense wires to the B- and P- positions on the terminal block .

  • Thanks Tom ,

I am planning to build my own PCB with appropriately rated terminal block and pcb traces. As per datasheet Rsense has a typical value of 5 mΩ to 20 mΩ.I  .I am planning to use CSS2H-2512R-L500F (  0.5mOHMS 6W 1%) current sense resistor). Will this Rsense suitable for my application (48V,20 A load ) and will the large footprint of the current resistor interfere with voltage accuracy.
