Battery Management System (BMS)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ76PL536A-Q1, BQ76PL455A-Q1, BQ77905, BQ76920, BQ7718

Hi,

Would like to have solution for the 6 Parallel and 3 Series Cell Lithium-Ion Battery Monitor, EV/HEV Integrated Battery Monitor and Protector w/Passive Balancing. This project will be for the automotive E-bicycle purpose. Need similar product like SH367004 (Sino Wealth Microelectronic). Battery spects are as below and Individual cell is of 3.7V/2400maH . Part number for Cell used is LGDBHE21865 from LG

  • Moving to correct forum.

  • Hi Vinayak,

THis device is very much like the bq77905 that we have released, but if you want something that is auto qual'ed i would suggest you look into our bq76PL536A-Q1 or the bq76PL455A-Q1.

You can also look into the bq76920 that has integrated HW protection like current protection unlike the PL devices i mentioned above. For 2nd level protection you can add our bq7718 devices to blow a fuse. Start with those devices.

    Thanks

    Miguel
  • Hi  Miguel,

Thanks for your reply. I check all data sheet for BMS but wanted to have confirmation series and parallel connections of cell is possible . as my project have both conditions.

    Appreciate your reply and support

  • Hi Vinayak,

Yes it is possible. Parallel cells will add to the capacity of the battery pack, and series will add to voltage of the battery pack. In general the devices i mentioned will focus only the cells in series, not in parallel as those in parallel, as I mentioned, add up to the capacity.

    Thanks

    Miguel
  • Hi Miguel,
I wanted to use part No#BQ76PL536A-Q1. There is one TI design, TIDA-00821. Using this Can I Build 6 Parallel and 3 Series Cell Lithium-Ion connected combination. Could you pls suggest the Block diagram. This device has cascading feature enabled that I was unable to locate in datasheet.
In this case, if I have more than 12 cells in “SERIES”, then can I connect the next set of cells to other device by cascading as 6 cells in series. So one device is required for it. If individual cells are connected to each other in parallel configuration, then one device should be ok. If there is no connection between individual cells in parallel, then three devices are required for each pack. This is a cell-balancing device.

    pls comment .
    waiting for your reply
  • Vinayak,

    You can do 3S6P with 1 PL536A.

    PL536A can support 3S to 6S.

For example, let's say you have 12S battery pack.

You can stack 3 PL536A. You can have 4 cells each device.

YOu can have 2 PL536A with 6 cells in series.

You can see how to connect less than 6 cells in figure 4 in the datasheet.

  • Hi Roger
OK can use cell connecting information with Fig 4. of PL536A
