LP3985: If device failed, what would be the failed state?

Part Number: LP3985

Hi,

LP3985-2.5 is used to drive LED with 5mA. What would happen if input is 7V which is slightly exceed the absolute voltage of 6.5V. Would it failed? If not, what is the maximum voltage it can withstand without damaging the device?

If device failed, what would be the failed state (output open, output short to GND or output short to Vin)?

Thanks.

  • If you cross the AbsMax rating part may not function correctly, or part may fail.

Most likely failure modes would be:

        1) Vin shorted to Vout (fast rising Vin)

       2) Vin shorted to Gnd. (slow rising Vin)

If the Vin supply has adequate current reserve, the 'Vin short to Gnd' would only last a few seconds, then the bond wire(s) will fuse open.
