BQ24610: Do smart battery pack requires battery charger controller ??

Part Number: BQ24610

I am using an smart battery pack from RRC (RRC2020) and from it's technical datasheet it is found that this battery pack has all necessary protection (eg: OC, OV OT and so on).

Now, my doubt is if battery itself is having all kind of protection what we suppose to take care by means of another battery charger controller (planned for BQ24610) then can we directly connect the battery terminal to external AC-DC adapter without any battery charger controller.

If yes, kindly explain me how the charging current will be limited to desired charging current value. (To avoid repetitive over current event detection by smart battery pack).

If No, kindly explain me the reasons which shall not allow to connect external AC-DC adapter to battery pack directly in order to charge the smart battery.

Thanks!

  • Hi Prakash,

Do you mean you want to intergrat the charger into the battery pack? I thiank it is ok. Can you provide you battery's technical documentation?
  • No, i don't want to integrate the charger into battery pack. As i have mentioned we are already having smart battery pack RRC2020.

Now, my doubt is if battery pack (RRC2020) itself is having all kind of protection what we suppose to take care by means of another battery charger controller (External to RRC2020 battery pack) then can we directly connect the battery terminal to external AC-DC adapter without any battery charger controller.

If No, kindly explain me the reasons which shall not allow to connect external AC-DC adapter to battery pack directly in order to charge the smart battery.

Note : Battery technical documentation can be downloaded from RRC official website

  • Hi Prakash
No, you still need a charger to deliver suitable power(CC/CV) to battery pack. If you don't have any charger the AC-DC adapter can't deliver suitable power to battery, always trigger the protection(Over voltage, over current etc..) and will reduce the battery's life time.
