LM5069: LM5069 circuit breaker not latching?

Hello,

I have a board with LM5069-1 hotswap controller including dv/dt startup.

I set the Current limit to about 12A. So I expect the Circuit Breaker feature to engage around 24A.

Everything behave as expected between 0A and 24A.

 

The problem:

With a DC load, I set a current load to 30A.

  • Between 0 and 8ms, the output voltage cuts out, then restarts (Ctimer below 4V)
  • Between 8.5 and 8.7, the output voltage cuts out, then restarts (Ctimer retry, still below 4V)
  • Above 8.8ms, the output voltage cuts out (Ctimer retry up to 4V)

 

The question:

When circuit breaker feature trigs, why does the gate not kept grounded? 

Is it normal that the circuit is only latched through "Current limit" feature (Ctimer > 4V)?

 

Configuration:

The main components values are:

  • Rsense = 5 mOhm (Plus R1/R2 = 2/10 ohms)
  • Ctimer = 12 nF
  • Cdvdt = 100 nF

On the oscilloscope figures (Zip file attached):

  • CH1 = V_Vtimer (Volt)
  • CH2 = V_Gate (Volt)
  • CH3 = V_out (Volt)
  • CH4 = V_Rsense (Volt)
  • Cursors delta indicate DC load ON duration

    The LM5069 latches off only after the timer pin has reached 4V (look below). During a circuit breaker event, the device pulls the gate down with a strong current source (approximately 230mA), and then it switches over to the power/current limit regulation current source. The timer then begins, while in current/power limit.

    One of the reasons the device behaves this way is so if the short-circuit event was temporary, the device will continue to run. But if the short circuit was permanent, then the timer would run right after the strong pull-down current and latch off once it reaches 4V. I hope this helps :-)
