BQ40Z50-R1: BMS BQ40Z50-R1+ Battery charger BQ24650

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24650, , BQ40Z50, BQ24765

Hi,

At the moment we are working on the lithium battery pack for our systems. For the BMS we chose the IC bq40z50-r1 due to all the features. One of them is the precharge option.  We are also using a BQ24650 as a battery charger, wich also has a precharge option. Because the charge current is controlled by the battery charger (bq24650) I am thinking to suppress the resistor that is in series with the precharge MOSFET in the BQ40Z50, using a 0 ohms value resistance. In the evaluation board of the BQ40Z50, that resistor es R1 and have a 300R value. I need to know opinions about this decision.

  • Hi Pablo,

You're on the right track with your decisions. You use 0-ohms for the pre-charge current limiting resistor and rely on bq27650 to limit the current. If you want a tighter feedback loop between the charger and bq40z50-R1, you can also look at using a smart charger as bq24765 and broadcast feature in bq40z50-R1 advanced charging algorithm that can request different currents from the charger based on the charge profile you setup.
