Hi Fuel Gauge Team,

Good morning, I'm working with a customer that is using the BQ40Z50-R1 in their design and is looking to do testing by simulating a battery.

A couple questions with this:

1. Can the device communicate without a battery/voltage on the BAT/VCx pins? The device is failing to communicate to a EV2400 in this case.

2. What is the best way to test the RSOC using a voltage or current source? When attaching the device to a power supply and changing the voltage, the RSOC isn't changing - as part of this, 10k resistors are being used in place of cells (maybe the impedance need to be closer to an actual cell?)

Hi John,

Send a reset command after changing the battery voltage. It will force the gauge to simulate and update RSOC.

Hi John,

Apply the voltage across PACK+ and PACK-. The gauge will wake up. You can emulate a battery pack with resistors and a power supply. See the bq40z50EVM users guide. With this approach you need to press the wake button to connet BAT to PACK+ momentarily.

Follow-up question on this - is there a way to bring up the device in a non-shutdown/shipping mode after a power on reset?

Hi John,

I'm not sure I understand what you meant by "non-shutdown/shipping mode after a power on reset." Once power is cycled to the gauge, the gauge needs to be woken by applying a voltage > 2.45 V to the PACK pin. See d/s VSHUTDOWN+ Start-up voltage | VPACK > VSHUTDOWN– + VHYS | 2.05 2.25 2.45 V|
