BQ40Z50-R1: Max internal balancing current and external balancing options

We are evaluating the bq40z50-r1 for use with a high capacity and discharge current battery. My understanding is that the internal balancer of bq40z50-r1 can only balance cells at a max current of 4.2mA with the smallest recommended resistances of 100Ohm between VC1-4 and the battery cells. Is this correct?

Because of the high capacity of our cells (6000mAh and 40C) we would like to be able to handle balancing currents of 0.5A to 1A. Is this at all possible with the bq40z50-r1 and if not does the bq40z50-r1 support an external balancer? If we need an external balancer and it is supported by the bq40z50-r1, may I please ask for a recommendation on an external balancer to look into that can work with the bq40z50-r1 and support the high balancing currents.

Hi Jan-cor,

The resistor value for the internal cell balancing is 100-ohms. See bq4z50EVM. It won't be able to support the 0.5 to 1A. bq40z50-R1 does support passive external cell balancing. I can send you a reference diagram on Monday. Please note that using such large cell balancing current will generate heat, so include it in your design considerations.
