TPS65217: DDR Compatibility VS PMIC version

Part Number: TPS65217
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3352

We are designing boards based on the Beagle Bone Black using the Sitara AM3352 in the ZCE footprint. We are using the TPS65217A as the PMIC.

When using the TPS65217A, are we restricted to using DDR2 memory, or can we use DDR3?

Thanks

  • Mark,

    Thank you for using E2E. Your question has been forwarded to a product specialist. You should receive a response soon.

  • Mark,

    As I understand it, each DDRx generation operated at a lower voltage than the previous generation:
    DDR = 2.5V
    DDR2 = 1.8V
    DDR3 = 1.5V
    LPDDR3 = 1.2V

    You can probably confirm this by looking at the datasheet for the DDR3 IC you are planning on using, but assuming 1.5V is correct then DDR3 memory cannot be substituted in for DDR2 shown in Figure 55 of the datasheet. 1.8V will be too high for DDR3 and this rail is used to provide power to many pins on the AM335x.

    What is the current consumption of your DDR3 chip?
    If it is low (<200mA), then you could possibly use LS1/LDO3 or LS2/LDO4 to deliver 1.5V to the DDR3 memory.
    If it is higher than this, you may need to add an LDO to your design to generate 1.5V for DDR3 from a higher voltage rail.
