-5V Hot Swap Controller

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2421-2

We have a -5V supply that, in the past, have used current limiting with resistors and fets but with currents up to 2A, there was significant power dissipation in the current sense resistors and FETs. We are attempting to lower the amount of power dissipation throughout the current limiting circuit.  We have used the TPS2421-2 for our positive supplies which have worked.  We are looking for a hot swap controller for our -5V and we were not sure if there was one that could be potentially used with this low voltage and just not specified by the data sheet. Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Scott,

Welcome to E2E! I'm moving this thread to the appropitate forum so that one of our engineers can respond as soon as possible.

  • Hi Scott,

    Thanks for reaching out!
Unfortunately we don't have device to support negative voltages. Can you please help with more information to understand better about the requirement.
Where exactly you intend negative voltage support and what kind of other protections are needed for such current limiting device? What is the load on -5V and the end equipment?

  • Hey Rakesh!

Thanks for getting back to me.  That is unfortunate! So a little bit about this project.  We require a negative five volt supply for RF applications where we need to reverse bias diodes and power up pre-amplifiers.  We are designing system end test equipment for a peripheral so this will be directly in line and close to the power supply and UVLO and OVLO are not necessarily required.  It is really just to make sure that there is not a short on the line. However, we need it to restart when there the short disappears because it is possible to have intermittent cables on the path. If you need anything else let me know!
