BQ24192: Can we design the application that can use either Charger or USB source for input?

Part Number: BQ24192
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24190

Dear TI,

I read from the datasheet that we need to configure PSEL and OTG pins for the selection of input current.

Does it mean that if I configure PSEL and OTG pins for adapter charger, then it can not be use with USB source?

I want to know if the PSEL and OTG can detect the power source of charging whenever I plug it in, and dont care that the Adapter charger or USB.

Please help me this.

Thank you very much.

  • Hey Thanh,

Setting PSEL and OTG to the fixed setting for a higher adapter input current does not mean you cannot use a USB source. However, USB spec'ed sources do have certain current limitations and voltage thresholds they have to meet before the port is "out of spec". Our charger have a VINDPM limit that prevents the input source from falling below a certain threshold which could help prevent the USB port from crashing.

In regards to your main question, the PSEL and OTG pins do not detect the type of input source. This means the part will pull current until the input voltage drops the VINDPM threshold or the input current limit is hit (whichever comes first).

I suggest looking at one of our chargers that has D+/D- detection, such as the bq24190 which is the same part aside from the input detection.

    Hope this helps!
