bq78z100: Gauge does not track after programming unless Reset is applied after batteries are discharged

Hi,

I'm employing a battery programming procedure where new batteries are programmed (using firmware update with a golden srec file) then discharged to empty, then shipped to customers.  Often times the batteries are assembled with cells at 30-50% capacaity in them. We're seeing that the State of charge does not track unless a reset is applied when the batteries are discharged.  We do not want to over-discharge the cells so we stop discharging at approximately 6.9V.  Fullycharged, the battery sits at 8.2 to 8.4V.  Here is data on one of these batteries:

Voltage State of Charge
After programming 7.459 57%
After discharge 7.05 57%
After Reset 7.05 19%

Is there something wrong with my golden image or my programming procedure?  Does a reset have to be applied after cells are discharged or is it the programming that needs to be performed after cells are discharged?

    can you pls attach a your golden gg file as well.

    One thing you should check is to make sure that your V,I ,T are measuring correctly. if no, run calibration. Also, are you using the right chem id for the cell and ws the learning cycle properly completed? Was the learning done on an EVM or on the actual board? Your board may have some trace resistance. There is a parameter in data flash where that can be programmed in the gauge.

  • V, I, and T are measuring what I expect.  In fact, after resetting the gas gauge after discharging, the gas gauge would track quite well.  SOC would go up to 100% - 8.3V upon a full charge and go down to 0 or 5% 6.9V on a full discharge.  Current also seem to make sense as the gauge would report approximately 0.8A on discharge.  This makes sense as the battery has 10.4mAh capacity and full discharge takes about 12 hours.

    Chem ID is also selected correctly.  It is a Samsung cell and we were able to find the exact cell in bqStudio. However, we contract out the battery assembly to a third party and the batteries come back in sealed housings.  As such, we did not open the battery to verify if the assembler put the cells we specified into the battery.  However, this assembly house has been pretty good and we do trust them.

    As for the learning cycle, I did perform a full discharge - rest- charge - rest - and discharge of the golden battery. However, the update status never went to 6, but the SOC tracked pretty nicely.  In fact, I've tried charge cycling over a dozen times and the status never gets updated to 6.  As such, the golden image has status update 4, but did undergo the learning cycle.  Can you think of anything else that can cause this?  Should reset be able to be applied irregardless of SOC?
